Recently, I had seen a post on social media about the lack of K-pop songs dominating the charts inside of the Philippines with the PH Top 200 being consisted of only local songs inside of the country. Another post had referenced that no foreign song is in the Top 20 in the country of Indonesia with most of the songs also being local. I have heard discussions about Southeast Asia audiences putting in more focus on their local talents and shifting from K-pop and Western Pop leading into the rise of local acts inside of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. I think that it’s awesome that local talents inside of these countries are finally receiving the recognition that they deserve as these acts appear to be extremely talented in their own right. However, I can’t help but feel like the K-pop industry is receiving a devastating blow as Southeast Asian audiences were one of the biggest consumers for K-pop and had played a huge role in laying down the groundwork for K-pop expansion outside of Asia.
I also think that the conversation surrounding this shift is not helping as a month ago, I had made a post about the lack of worry among K-pop fans surrounding Southeast Asian audiences focusing more on their own talents and leaving K-pop into which most of the comments had disregarded the support of Southeast Asia by citing how K-pop had received huge support from bigger markets like the USA, Japan, and China. I have heard from Southeast Asian consumers about how a lot of K-pop fans tend to dismiss their support on K-pop and its contributions to the industry and K-pop acts operating inside of it. Now with, the shift towards their own local talent, I feel like K-pop and its acts will receive a significant blow in the charting and concert attendance inside Southeast Asia.
What do you guys think?
