I feel like the more you know about K-pop, the less cool you feel.

I don’t know if some of you feel the same way more than you’d like to admit, but the more you know about kpop, the less and less ‘cool’ you feel. I mean, everyone has some ‘coolness’ in them, of course, but the more you learn about kpop, the more that coolness gets chipped away bit by bit. When you’re into kpop and collect albums, merch and stuff, nobody’s going to look at you and think you’re a ‘cool kid’. I don’t mean that in a negative way, nor do I think you need to care about it. That’s just what it is.

At the moment, I feel like I know way too much about kpop. I know Pledis, Meovv, Treasure, Ablume, TripleS, Cortis, JYP, Chaewon, Bana, Fromis, Izna etc. and I feel kind of embarrassed that I know all this stuff. It’s absolutely not a flex. On the other hand, reading stuff about kpop is like shooting a speedball, you keep craving more and more updates, only to regret it the next morning. Then you stay ‘sober’ for days, only to accidentally see a post and find yourself down the rabbit hole again.

When I was outside the kpop space, I used to think kpop fans’ behavior was just as bad as their music taste, but when I’m inside the space, I’m not entirely wrong. Consuming all those highly manufactured slop music that have nothing to say might be one of the contributing factors, because music is supposed to break all barriers and bring people together, but with all the toxicity, fan wars, etc., it can only mean that the music failed them. People who grew up listening to music made by the working-class and those who grew up listening to music made by the corporate are likely to have different ways of viewing music.
