Not sure if many others realize this, but the 2027 Asian Cup is right around the corner (Jan. 7 – Feb. 5, 2027). That’s only a few months after the World Cup, and if we’re serious about competing for a trophy, we cannot afford to waste any time.
There’s a laundry list of things that need to happen:
- A serious review of Hong’s tenure – Even if there’s a dramatic turnaround at the WC, I don’t think he’s the manager to take us forward. The football has been uninspiring and it’s clear that the players aren’t responding to his leadership. Sacking Hong is one thing, but the KFA’s corruption stems back for years… There really needs to be a serious inquiry by some 3rd party to figure out how we can re-organize the FA.
- Stop selecting players based on reputation and favoritism – As much as I love players like Hwang Hee Chan, the guy was riding bench all season at Wolves and it’s just baffling to me that we’re picking favorites based on what some players did 3-4 years ago. We’ve seen too many underperforming veterans keep their places while younger players barely get any opportunities.
- Build around the next generation – Kangin is entering his prime years, and players like Bae Jun Ho, Yang Hyun Jun, and Yoon Do Young need to start getting meaningful minutes now – not after Son retires. The transition really needs to be underway.
- Most importantly: build an actual playing identity – You can criticize Bento all you want, but the man actually had attacking philosophy and we tried to actually win games before. I have no confidence in this team right now – forget about Japan – other Asian teams like Iran, Jordan, and Australia all have clearer tactical identities than we do.
This is all a pipe dream given that the more likely scenario is that the FA will continue to operate the way they did because they’re a group of spineless assholes who cannot ever admit that they got things wrong…
I sincerely hope that I’m proven wrong but if we continue to go like this, there is absolutely 0 shot we will make it past the RO16 in the Asian Cup.
