Is the Korean Kisaeng/Gisaeng the exact equivalent of the Japanese Geisha?

I am just wondering, are the Kisaeng and the Geisha the exact same type of occupation? I once watched a TV Series titled Hwang Jini, and the protagonist in the story was a Kisaeng who was able to rise to power and influence, and she was able to influence Joseon’s Royal Court.

Both Kisaeng and Geisha are known to be well trained in the arts, cultural dances, tea ceremonies, etc. but what are the differences between these two?

I will really appreciate your responses.
