The Curse of Hong Myung-bo

The Curse of Hong Myung-bo

Germany and Japan have been eliminated in the Round of 32 today. They also happen to be two teams involved in the nine possibilities for South Korea to advance to the R32.

If you don’t know, people immediately made a table with nine conditionals, of which at least three needed to come true in order for Korea to advance. The attached picture is the table after the midpoint of the group stage. In the end, only one of the nine items came in favor of the Korean team.

This is where I propose the Curse of Hong Myung-bo. Our glorious former manager, who has soon after the World Cup devastation graciously stepped down, ensured that no team that could’ve helped him but didn’t would advance to the next round. Japan and Germany had already locked up their place in the R32 by their third matches, and did not “help” HMB and the Korean team advance.

Hang on, why did he not curse Paraguay, a team that did not help Hong’s team by winning by 2 goals? It’s because Hong is a merciful and gracious manager who knew that Paraguay was also at threat of elimination if they lost, so they couldn’t help but play to a draw. They were fighting for their lives, and Hong knew and understood their plight. What a great man he is, Hong Myung-bo! His curse only targets the evils of the world who have already secured their spots in the next round at before Game 3 and did not go all in to help the Korean team advance.

Under these parameters (could’ve helped Korea advance; already had R32 locked in), the two other teams that will lose are Egypt and Ghana. If these two do not make it through, it will become crystal clear that our glorious manager has cursed those teams who have spited him by ruining his glorious plan to lock in a 3rd place finish which would allow him to face the likes of Belgium or Switzerland, which of course the splendid and all-knowing leader of our national team could trounce by a score of 6-2.
