I say this as someone who stans many groups, including those outside the Big 4. I want my groups to sell more albums, chart higher, and win music shows, not so I can brag about their achievements or weaponize them in fanwars but because I want to be able to see and support my favorite groups for as long as possible.
I know a lot of people say not to care about these numbers and to just enjoy and appreciate the groups and their music. Well yeah, ofc I appreciate them. I just want to be able to appreciate them for as long as possible. The lifecycle of a kpop group is already much shorter than that of many artists in other industries. Especially for groups outside the Big 4, every comeback can matter so much. A consecutive string of poor chart performances can be enough for a group to get sidelined or placed in the dungeon for who knows how long, and in many cases, it can lead to disbandment.
I just wanted to clarify that fans who are fixated on numbers aren’t necessarily shallow or interested in bragging rights. Sometimes, they care about those numbers simply because they want their favorite groups to have a sustainable career and to be around for as long as possible.
