A few days ago, I had posted about international award shows, their criteria, and the lack of K-pop groups not being nominated inside the main categories at international award shows. One commenter under my post had explained about K-pop groups not being considered mainstream in the USA and had stated that if these groups were American groups, they would be questioned whether they are mainstream or not. The groups that were mentioned were BTS, Blackpink, Stray Kids, Aespa, Twice, and Le sserafism as groups that would not be questioned if they were mainstream if they were American groups. While I didn’t agree with Stray Kids, Aespa, Twice, and Le sserafism, I did agree that if BTS and Blackpink were American acts they would not be questioned on whether or not if they were niche or mainstream. I mean just think about it, BTS had achieved records that no other act in K-pop had achieved and have broken records that were set by music bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Blackpink had changed the game for girl groups in K-pop and had broken records that were set by the Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, and TLC. However, when Katseye had started to achieve popularity and success in the USA, you already got comments from casual fans (not antis) saying that Katseye is more popular that Blackpink inside of the country. A group that was formed under HYBE and Geffen Record and are based in LA are considered more popular than Blackpink. I think that Katseye are a really talented group and deserve their success that they had achieved as they had worked hard for those accolades so I am not hating on the group nor downplaying their accolades I know that xenophobia tends to play a role in how K-pop groups are treated internationally, however there are a lot of these comments that come from K-pop fans who lives in countries outside of Asia. I mean there are some comments from K-pop fans that explains how they get annoyed whenever BTS or Blackpink are brought up when it comes to them liking K-pop on the international scene.
So, in all, if BTS and Blackpink where American groups would they be called mainstream due their accolades that they had achieved differently throughout their careers?
