How much was and is K-pop consumed in Korea during the 1st-5th generation?

Recently, I was watching a video posted by a Army YouTuber named Boracity Magazine titled “bts and “k-pop without the k” in which she had discussed about a American podcast talking about certain topics like BTS’ English songs and Jungkook’s album Golden (2023). In the video she had breakdown topics and had criticized some of the comments that the podcasters had made about BTS and their music. However, one thing had caught my attention was her take about one of the podcasters discussing Korea being gravitated towards music acts like AKMU in which Bora had agreed with this statement and had cited how Korea doesn’t listen to songs like How You Like That (Blackpink), Boombayah (Blackpink), Ringa Linga (Taeyang), Fantastic Baby (Bigbang), and Bang Bang Bang (Bigbang). Bora had explained about complaints about BTS sounding mainstream are from American K-pop fans who want K-pop is be nothing more than weird and that Korea listens to thoughtful and normal music like AKMU and BTS not K-pop. I am particularly a fan of Blackpink so I am not deep into the history of K-pop so I want to know about K-pop’s popularity in Korea.

Disclaimer: I like watching videos analyzing different things so I had decided to watch this video which was released in 2024. Please do not sent hate towards this YouTuber and please have a respective conversation about this question.
