Recently I had made a post about K-pop losing its footing in Southeast Asia due to the rise of local talent and the after math of KOR vs SEA war online. Under my post, there were comments from fans claiming that Southeast Asia is and was not a big contributor for K-pop and its industry compared to other big markets like China, Japan, and the USA hence why K-pop fans aren’t worried and companies not really caring about the Southeast Asian market. However, I have heard from many fans in the past that Southeast Asia was a big contributor towards K-pop and its industry during the second and third generation and that popular K-pop groups have held sold out concerts inside of the region. Not only that, but some had contributed the recent performances of K-pop groups on the Spotify Global chart to them losing popularity in Southeast Asia. This had caused me to be confused as one side said that the region was a huge consumer for K-pop while the other side said that the region was not and that fans were overestimating the contribution of Southeast Asia towards K-pop. So, was the Southeast Asian market ever a big consumer for K-pop and its industry or not?
