Looking back, I feel like Fingertip gets blamed way too much for being this huge concept switch that killed their momentum.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand why people saw it that way, but sonically I don’t think Fingertip was actually that different from their previous releases.
The synth + electric guitar combination was quite literally what Navillera was. IMO, Fingertip is about as big of a change from Navillera as Rough was from Me Gustas Tu. It still sounds like a GFRIEND song to me. Dare I say it could’ve easily been a B-side on the LOL album.
I think people saw them suddenly wearing these military-inspired uniforms and holding guns instead of the girl-next-door, shoujo anime-esque image they were known for and thought “oh, they’ve changed too much.” But musically I really don’t think the change was that drastic.
Now imagine if the MV was just them doing mundane “rebellious” stuff like skipping classes, getting into shenanigans after school, sneaking around school, etc .. boom! It’s GFRIEND again.
I think it’s just another case of the visuals shaping people’s perception of the music more than the music itself.
