Why does the west consider Seo Taiji the creator of K-pop?

Koreans don’t even say this. JYP would be mentioned more. In fact the term gayo refers to Korean pop music, and idol refers to what westerners consider kpop. If we’re talking about idols, HOT was really the first popular group. If we’re talking about pop music, there were so many other artists before Seo Taiji. Sobangcha, Kim Wan Sun, and Park Nam Jung were pop legends in the 80s before Seo Taiji debuted in the 90s.

I was listening to Korean music since the early 90s, and also older songs from the 80s that my family played. I do remember Seo Taiji being popular, but nowhere near the level of “creator of Kpop”. It was until the late 90s/early 00s that YG Family paved the way for hip hop in kpop, and Drunken Tiger for more authentic K-hip hop.
