Why is the narrative that idols are not allowed to date and only love their fans so normalized?

I’m watching “I dol I” right now and I think it’s great so far. However I am on episode 4 and I strongly dislike how depressed the main character gets when we get a throwback when she got the news about Ra-ik’s dating rumors.

I liked her at first because she seemed much more like a normal fans than the Saesangs that broke into his house – and the way she described loving someone from afar, but even she takes it a bit too far with the parasocial aspect..

why is it that it is so normalized that idols are expected to not date and only “devote all their love to their fans”?? Even her friend in this movie starts shittalking what a bad guy Ra-ik is for lying about only loving his fans. Like what sorry?? Are idols not human too?? It’s not only parasocial – it’s incredibly unrealistic and toxic. If I was an idol, I would start growing some resentment against my fans if they felt this entitled to my life.

It just upset me, because it’s so normalized that it shows in shows like this – and it’s so far not criticized. – hopefully it will though… I just paused to make this post, because I know it’s a very real thing in the K-pop world in general and it irks me..

If you truly love and look up to an idol, then you respect them and their autonomy as well. If you don’t, then it’s not love – it’s selfish toxic entitlement. Maybe bit of narcissism as well for thinking you even got a chance – which very likely is true for Sasaeng who violates extreme amount of boundaries.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s fine to dream and fantasize. It’s just how you act upon that, that says a lot about you…
