There are just some things that got me thinking and I want to express my opinion and hopefully have a decent & meaningful discussion through this post.
The first one is will Arirang/Swim ‘qualified’ for Asian Pop had BTS decided to submit it to the Grammys ?.Majority of this album/song is in English & CMIIW but the criteria says that the body of work should have ‘meaningful use of asian language’.What does that mean & who will decide that a certain Asian artist used his/her language meaningfully enough to qualify for this category ?.Does this mean that regardless of the content,impact,performance & everything, a song/album is automatically not considered/qualified because of the language used ?
I’m from a country who uses English as much as our official language & artists release albums/songs in English as well.Does this mean that they also won’t qualify in this category despite being Asians just because they sung in English ?.
Second is that we should understand that BTS can do this because they are BTS but not everyone has that luxury.HYBE themselves made it clear that it’s the members’ personal decision & not a company wide policy.They reiterated that should any of the artists under their label wants to submit to the Grammys,they would proceed & support/campaign for it just like usual.I don’t know how true it is or if HYBE is just making sure that they have all bases covered coz it’s just recently that they were ‘accused’ of blocking a group from submitting cause they want BTS to be the first to win a Grammy.
We should take into consideration that not all artist are big enough or have the autonomy to decide.Some of them might personally support or believe BTS stance/position but it’s the company/agency calling the shots.
I personally don’t think that BTS needs a Grammy but I always look at it as something like more of a personal goal/target of the members more than a necessity.I just hope that we can all just respect whoever wins this award but I’m not too optimistic.I think it’s fair to criticize & question as long as it’s not just disguised hate/ridicule.
