Director Kim Hyeon-ji’s documentary, “A Man Who Heals the City,” shows the life of Kim Jang-ha, who made large donations to diverse causes while running Namseongdang Hanyakbang in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province. After graduating from middle school, he worked for a hanyakbang, a kind of traditional Korean medicine clinic, because he was poor. Later he opened his own. Because the herbal medicines he prescribed were both cheap and effective, many patients went to his clinic and he became rich. He couldn’t spend the money he earned from sick people just for himself, so he gave back to society. Kim says, “Money is like dung. If it is piled up, it stinks. But if it is scattered over the field, it becomes good manure.” He didn’t drive a car but instead rode a bicycle. He founded Myeongsin High School and awarded scholarships to poor students. Also, he donated money for women’s rights, a local newspaper, ecosystem conservation,social equality movements and more.
