I thought I became a K-pop fan 2 years ago, but BoA was actually my gateway 20 years ago.

When I saw on X that BoA had appeared on a Japanese FM radio show, it made me feel surprisingly nostalgic.

To be precise, after experiencing her impact all those years ago, I completely stopped following her, and I didn’t listen to K-pop at all. I had honestly forgotten about her until just two years ago, when I suddenly got into modern K-pop girl groups. Today, I mostly enjoy it simply as pop music. To be honest, I don’t really know what kind of presence BoA has in Korea right now, and I’m not very familiar with her recent career. I assume she’s still highly respected, but I can’t really speak on that.

What her recent appearance did remind me of, though, is how much of an impact she had on Japan when she first debuted here.

Looking back, I now realize that BoA was actually my very first step toward discovering K-pop, even though I didn’t know it at the time. Back then, I knew almost nothing about Korean music and wasn’t interested in idols at all. But when I heard her sing, I was genuinely amazed by how talented she was. And she was so young, too.

I sometimes feel that younger fans may not fully realize how significant BoA’s presence was for many Japanese people of my generation. Of course, debuting alone in a foreign country was remarkable in itself, but her success also helped create a path that many K-pop artists would later follow in Japan.

I’m not trying to say that everything started with BoA, but I do think her contribution to K-pop’s history in Japan was enormous. When I see Korean artists releasing Japanese singles and albums today, it often makes me think about the foundation that artists like her helped build.

After seeing the radio news, I decided to listen to her song, Ain’t No Hard Feelings, and I honestly loved it. It left me feeling unexpectedly happy, and it reminded me how much her music meant to me, even before I knew what K-pop was.
