It really annoys me when people call everything K-pop.

There’s always a gray area in every genre or style, but honestly, when I look at some of the groups people insist on calling K-pop, it feels excessive. What do they even think the “K” in K-pop stands for? Now there are claims that a group made up entirely of Japanese members, under a Japanese company, can be called K-pop or “K-pop-adjacent” just because they mix in a few Korean words.

If you took another country or group and blurred it together with a different one—basically saying, “Aren’t they all the same anyway?”—people would be furious. So why do so many people take that attitude toward certain genres or music scenes? I honestly don’t get it. And is this really unrelated to the way some Westerners lump multiple countries together under a vague idea of “Asian”? I genuinely don’t understand why people who call themselves K-pop fans seem to lack even a basic understanding of, or respect for, the genre itself.
