I keep seeing lists, comments etc. labelling idols as religious (mostly Christian), in a manner that makes it seem like hard “facts”. Often it’s based on whether someone was baptised, once sang a religious song, went to a Christian high school or was in a choir as a kid.
And I think it’s a bit controversial.
First of all, I wanna say that I know several idols have spoken about their religion, so we can take that as facts.
But being baptised doesn’t necessarily have much to do with being religious anymore, since parents choose to baptise their children when they are babies.
I don’t know how it is in America, but in Europe most people are Christians on paper but, in our generation, don’t practise at all (most are just too lazy to officially leave the church I’d say since it takes some administrative work, or they just don’t care enough).
The holidays are often still celebrated, even by atheists, since most traditions are technically religious events and a huge part of the culture is based on Christianity. However, just because someone wants to keep a tradition alive doesn’t mean they are actually religious.
That being said, I think it’s even more of a stretch to label someone as religious/Christian just because they were in a choir or sang a religious song once. Most western traditional music has a religious background.
Same goes for schools: many schools in Europe & Australia have a Christian name (St. … High School/College), but nothing religious is taught there. They are just labeled “Catholic” or “Christian” based on their history.
