It has been eight years since Blackpink’s rise to global popularity and six years since the group had been labeled “the biggest girl group in the world” by mainstream media outlets like The Recording Academy, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Time, and BBC due to their success and accolades globally. It has been six months till the group had released Deadline (2026) in which many had considered it as a underperformance compared to their last two albums, The Album (2020) and Born Pink (2022). However, since the group’s last album, it seems like no girl groups has received the title of the “biggest girl group in the world” by mainstream media outlets leaving me questioning on how can a girl group achieve this prestigious title. When discussing the essence of Blackpink’s popularity, many people had cited factors like their music, casual reach, YG’s marketing, timing, social media, and anticipation from their long hiatuses. However, I still confused with the way Blackpink’s popularity is being discussed as many non fans had felt that the gap between them and other groups weren’t that big and wide.
If that were the case, then another girl group should have surpassed Blackpink easily while the group was on their long hiatuses in K-pop. Many had often stated that Blackpink’s comeback tends to generate hype and anticipation which plays a huge role in a lot of their accolades as a group in K-pop. Some had claimed that if Blackpink had occasionally released music then that hype around them dies down and that the group wouldn’t achieve the accolades of their peak years just like other groups with long discographies in K-pop. This statement confuses me as BTS occasionally releases music and has a huge discography yet have able to achieve newer accolades with each their songs and albums. I am not comparing BTS to any act in K-pop and the group is literally the biggest music in the world and have accolades that are impossible for other K-pop acts to reach.
I am discussing about the conversation of groups losing popularity when constantly release music in which some fans had stated as to why Blackpink’s comebacks are so successful in K-pop. With Jisoo, Jennie, and Lisa releasing new music and the group continuing their hiatus, I was wondering about the accolades that a girl group can achieve in order for mainstream media outlets to mention them with this title in the future.
