By this, I mean the one big sign that a group is actively going downhill and will not likely be able go recover. For me it’s:
-
Sudden or frequent concept changes: I think this can be done successfully, but when a group jumps from concept to concept and it’s clear that their company is just throwing shit at the wall, it’s generally not a good sign. Despite saying otherwise, a lot of K-pop fans do not react well to change and often find concept changes to be desperate.
-
Lineup changes: Unless apart of the groups concept, a change in members will almost always result in the loss of fans. Maybe less so if members leave, but more so if members are added.
-
Losing an integral member: Kind of going with the above point, but losing a member that was integral to the groups image, sound, or personality is always a killer, especially if they were involved in the song making process.
-
Frequent hiatuses or major gaps between activities: Only seeing a group when they have a comeback, and promotions literally lasting for a week. The industry is all about exposure, if you aren’t getting put out there, it moves on.
-
Survival Show Appearances: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group going on a survival show actually increase their popularity, if anything it almost always seems poorly timed and to be a momentum killer.
Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, but once I see one (or multiple) of these, I start mentally preparing myself, especially if the group is on the nugu side.
