For example, SM considered many different lineups of their trainees for SHINee, but the two constants were always Jonghyun and Taemin, so SHINee was built around Jonghyun and Taemin.
An old example, but another one of my favorite groups is TVXQ, and when they were putting together the (original) 5 member group they did entire photo shoots to see how various trainees looked next to each other as a group, but the one member who was never switched out of the lineup was Junsu, who became the group’s ace.
I also remember reading that BTS was formed around Namjoon, but ARMYs can correct me on that if I’m wrong.
I wonder how common this practice is of building a K-Pop group around one specific person is. Logically it makes sense: you find someone with a particularly strong visual aesthetic or skill set to serve as the group’s identity and then you find people who can fit into or even enhance that identity. It’s similar to how teams are built around star players in sports.
Was your favorite K-Pop group built this way? I’d love to hear more about the history of your favorite K-Pop group’s formation.
