I think the author makes pretty good points esp with how I’ve recently noticed is that a lot of Western discussion about Korea is very weird. It’s often unnecessarily hostile towards a country they’ve probably never been to and have only seen online, but strangely detached from what the country actually feels like. If you only consumed YouTube video essays, Twitter threads, or western pop culture subreddits, you’d think Korea was some kind of social experiment on the brink of collapse.
I also find that people who consume huge amounts of Korean media often end up talking about Korea itself. Kpop and Kdrama fans will casually make sweeping statements about “Koreans” being shallow, robotic, misogynistic, obsessed with looks, or emotionally stunted, complaining about toxic knetz, stereotyping idols or making generalizations but then talk about how much they love their idols and acting like they’re victims of the people they come from. There’s a strange double standard where broad stereotypes about millions Koreans.
The author also draws parallels with Japan in the 1980s and 90s, when Western media often portrayed it as an economically successful but spiritually empty corporate dystopia. Now that Japan isn’t viewed as the main economic challenger anymore, they argue that Korea has inherited that role.
I’m not sure I agree with every conclusion. I think some of it overstates the idea of a coordinated Western narrative negative stories simply generate more attention everywhere. But I do think there’s something to the observation that Korea is judged in a very unusual way. Countries with comparable problems often aren’t reduced to those problems in quite the same fashion. People especially love to dog on the birth rate but literally every first world country has low birth rates right now, the west gets around it by.
