I hate the way people are talking about the Engene situation.

If you don’t know what situation I’m referring to look up the Engene Mina and what happened to her.

Now that we’re all up to speed, I want to say that I am not and never have been an Engene, however I feel like the conversation surrounding Mina’s death is way too focused on who’s at fault. The problem with focusing on whose fault this is, is that if we look for someone else to shift the blame to then this problem of cyber bullying and harassment is going to continue. If you are more focused on “wow Engene as a whole are such a toxic fandom” or “oh East Asian kpop fans pushed another person over the edge” or “no western kpop fans are the ones who did it” or even “this is all Ni-ki’s fault because of what he said in that live” than “how can we prevent things like this from happening in the future” then you have taken the wrong lesson away from this situation. Because it’s not just one fandom or one part of a fandom or one person who caused this.

There has been a culture of kpop fans bullying people in the name of their faves for so long now and I hate the fact that another person had to lose their life for people to take this seriously. We see a lot of people talk about how we shouldn’t bully idols because they’re human beings just like us, so I don’t understand why that hasn’t been applied to other kpop fans or just other people in general. Obviously this problem is bigger than just the kpop community but we have to start somewhere. We all need to look inward and reflect on the way we treat other people (both online and in real life) because as the internet has become apart of more people’s daily lives, we’ve become more callous about saying horrible things to other people and it’s going to keep escalating if we don’t stop it now. I also hope instead of using Mina in fan wars and other stupid crap, we can collectively send her and her loved ones the love and support they need.

Mina, I’m so sorry all this happened and wherever you’ve gone, I sincerely hope you’re not in so much fear and pain anymore. I hope that you know there not only were people who loved you before, but people who still love you now. Finally, I hope you can rest peacefully.
