I have a theory/proposal. I know most people say Golden by Huntrix is the first kpop song to win a Grammy when it won in the visual media category last year. But the Grammys has DeFINED both the kpop and Asian pop genre and that definition requires meaningful use of an Asian language. So, according to the Grammys, Golden does not qualify as Asian Pop (which includes Kpop) and that means no Asian pop or kpop song has yet won a Grammy. So the first Asian pop song — and maybe the first kpop song (depends on whether Kpop wins any awards) — will win in 2027. …. I personally like the Asian language requirement in the Grammy category because I don’t want songs like Gnarly and Golden — which are written by and for a western audience — to take over a genre which is intended to honor its Asian roots. On the other hand, I am glad the category doesn’t require the performer to be Asian or be from Asia because that would be about racism/nationalism and not about celebrating a culture.
