Personally, I don’t think being a great vocalist in a girl group is just about singing well.For me, a true top‑tier vocalist needs:
Vocal technique — clean ad‑libs, stable harmonies, consistent pitch, and the stamina to sing flawlessly even after intense choreography.
Main vocal power — on top of the above, precision in long notes and high notes, plus strength and control.
Genre versatility — the ability to handle K‑pop, J‑pop, English songs, R&B, rock, cute concepts, Y2K vibes… anything.
Solo capability — not mandatory, but definitely a plus.
Stage presence — especially for girl groups, vocal performance must come with charisma and visual impact.
With all that considered, Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation still feels like the benchmark.But Rosé of BLACKPINK is impossible to ignore — not only as BLACKPINK’s main vocal, but also as a globally successful soloist. Even with YG’s backing, collaborating with Bruno Mars on a worldwide project is no small feat.
If we talk pure vocal technique, there are many strong contenders.But in terms of skill + achievements + cultural impact, Taeyeon and Rosé absolutely belong in the GOAT conversation.

If we talk global impact as a vocalist, Rosé is hard to leave out. Her “Let It Be” cover is one of my favorites.JeA is incredibly soulful — that era of girl group main vocals was full of monsters.Ahyeon and Yuri are personal favorites:Ahyeon looks like a delicate, cute girl but delivers bazooka‑level high notes with aggressive, sexy, cool stage presence.Yuri’s clean, cute vibe paired with her soaring husky high notes is genuinely beautiful.
5th‑gen picks
If I had to name a standout, Belle from KISS OF LIFE is the closest thing to an “Ariana‑Grande‑like” vocalist among recent girl group idols.
And although it might sound unexpected, I’d also mention Minami from RESCENE.In pure K‑pop vocal technique, she may not surpass the legends listed above.But her strength lies in self‑production and versatility:
She uses her clean K‑pop‑trained voice to sing English songs and J‑pop.
She can fully embody a Japanese “gal” persona.
She even performs extremely difficult Vocaloid tracks like Luka Luka Night Fever at a high level.
In today’s girl group landscape, where self‑production and multi‑genre adaptability matter more than ever, Minami has already shown one valid “answer” for what a modern main vocal can be.
