I think we all know that SM prefers to have their groups lipsync while in promotions right after a release. It’s always been common, but the use of lipsync and live AR has skyrocketed since the pandemic especially.
Given that, their promotions of RIIZE’s new single Insomnia has been really interesting to me. They’ve been uploading live and mostly unedited clips of the members singing the song, both a capella and with Wonbin playing guitar. They have published clips of the members trying different harmonies, playing around with the sound in staircases, and even had them perform it live with little backtrack during the first performance at their comeback showcase live event. They had slight mistakes, but we could clearly tell they made them! How rare is that nowadays? The clips of them practicing also include when they mess up, and show them figuring out how best to balance their voices, which is both cool to see and cool to see SM post.
This is really unusual for SM, and really for the whole industry. This many behind clips for a song and especially the behind clips being used as the main promotion on their channel- it’s wild.
I’m really curious if this will stick to RIIZE when they put out their album. I hope it does, it’s lovely to hear how they’re improving. The videos of them in the practice room have so little vocal processing, if any at all. It’s amazing to hear raw vocals from them like this. They sound so good! I’m also curious if this will become more standard for SM groups, seeing as it’s been a successful strategy for RIIZE so far. And I’m of course very curious what you all think of this!
