Kimchi-bokkeumbap (김치볶음밥) — a recipe from the cooking app I’m building

Hi everyone! I’m an indie developer from South Korea building Let’s Eat Today, an app that helps you find dishes using ingredients you already have. It includes recipes from around the world, with a particularly large collection of Korean dishes. I made it to help people feel more comfortable cooking Korean food at home and find something they can make with what’s in their kitchen. I checked with the moderators before sharing this.

Here’s the kimchi fried rice recipe included in the app, with the full ingredients and instructions below.

Essential ingredients

• Cooked rice: 1 bowl

• Napa cabbage kimchi: ½ cup (100 ml), finely chopped, including 1 tbsp kimchi juice

• Cooking oil: 1 tbsp

Extra ingredients — optional

• Welsh onion (large green onion): ⅓ stalk, thinly sliced

• Ham: 50 g, finely diced

• Sugar: ½ tsp

• Sesame oil: ½ tbsp

• Egg: 1

• Gim (dried laver sheets): a little, crumbled

• Soy sauce: ½ tbsp

Method

  1. Put the kimchi in a bowl and snip it into 1 cm pieces with scissors. Reserve 1 tbsp of kimchi juice.

  2. If the rice is cold, break up any clumps with a spatula.

  3. Add the cooking oil to a pan and heat over medium heat for about 30 seconds. Add the green onion now, if using.

  4. Add the kimchi and sauté over medium heat for 3 minutes, until softened and slightly translucent at the edges. Add the ham now, if using.

  5. Push the kimchi to one side of the pan. Pour the soy sauce, if using, and reserved kimchi juice into the empty space. Let them bubble for about 10 seconds, then mix with the kimchi. Add the sugar now, if using.

  6. Add the rice and increase to high heat. Stir with a cutting motion for 2 minutes, until the grains are evenly coated red.

  7. Turn off the heat, taste, and transfer to a bowl. Finish with sesame oil, a cooked egg, and crumbled gim, if using.

Tip

Use well-fermented, sour napa cabbage kimchi. Sauté it until its moisture cooks off before adding the rice, so the rice stays fluffy and develops a savory flavor.

About the app

Disclosure: I’m the developer of Let’s Eat Today. This is one of the recipes in the app, which lets you search for dishes based on the ingredients you have. In the version released in Korea, you can also easily shop for ingredients you’re missing through links to online grocery stores. The images show the dish image used in the app and actual screens of the search, ingredients, and cooking steps.
