Korean Opinion of USA 2025

To be fair, this is a slightly inflammatory post in a sense, unfortunately the best way for you to understand my full meaning is through anecdote and a bit of preamble. So forgive me that, or don’t, whatever, sorry.

The crux of the matter is that I found while living in Korea for 2 years that some Koreans generally had a bias towards the USA/Americans generally. It’s my understanding of course, that many countries around the world idealize the USA as being a land of opportunity as it exists as some fantasy in their head.

However, topical to South Korea, while I understand well the historical contexts, foreign aid, military support, etc, I still honestly have a hard time understanding why some Koreans seem so excited about the USA. While some of the Americans I’ve met abroad have been some of the most amazing, interesting, and intelligent people I have had the privilege of getting to know — many of the people who have taken the cake for being the most ostentatious, entitled, and crazy, have also by and large been Americans (please forgive the stereotyping, it’s just my experience with the people I happened to run into).

In any case, one of the reasons I think China is growing as an alternative option to Korea, as a non-American, is my overall perception that Korea has a bit of an American feel and attitude in some respects (this is the really inflammatory part!).

While I know this is all very complex and largely anecdotal, I would appreciate hearing some of your well-reasoned thoughts on this matter. Again, I love many Americans and Koreans, and this is about as spicy as it gets for me. Thank you ~
