BTS are currently in Chile for their South American leg of the Arirang tour and after last nights show I had a thought about how truly beautiful something as seemingly mundane as music can truly be.
There is a segment during BTS’ show where they play two random songs from their discography and during their second show in Chile they played Heartbeat, a song from their BTS world album. This album was made for a game back in 2019 and even though it’s very popular among fans, it was kind of forgotten by BTS. I think that’s why the members didn’t quite expect such an intense reaction from the crowd. Their first performance of Heartbeat ever and the audience was going word for word bar for bar with them. You could see it in their faces how touched they were.
Then minutes later Taehyung is on stage giving his final speech fully in Spanish, something he’s been doing for the last few stops and that’s when I started thinking aw, this is such a lovely moment of connection.
A stadium of Chileans singing a Korean song word for word and a Korean idol speaking to them in their native language so he can better connect with them and show appreciation. It’s not like it’s some revolutionary act but I think especially in a world that’s become so negative and miserable we over look these really special and heartwarming moments where differences are set aside and you see the beauty in human connection.
Anyways it’s just a random thought of appreciation. Kpop can garner a lot of negativity but I think moments like that really show what this can all be about and bring out the best of us, when we can use music as a safe space and a way to be together.
