Hi there,
Recently had a holiday in Korea and did a bit of swiping on tinder while I was there. I matched with a guy, late 30s, who wasn’t “blue tick verified” and location was turned off. We enjoyed chatting, but by that time I had already left Korea so we didn’t meet.
We’ve been chatting for a little over a week on whatsapp. Things started getting a little heated last night and we sent each other photos etc. But nothing with his face in it.
Today he asked me some odd questions, saying he thought I was still in Korea, when we had discussed previously that I wasn’t. It got my curiosity up, so I sent him a video of me saying hello and his name etc and asked me to do the same.
He told me he was too shy and that maybe one day we can video chat. But I’m not comfortable to continue unless I know the person I’m talking to is legit.
So I said if he doesn’t feel comfortable with a video, send a photo holding a spoon or chopsticks or whatever. He told me I was being ridiculous and that people don’t act like that where he is from. And that I offended him.
I explained to him that as a woman, I need to be careful and men have tricked me before. He is very upset at me and honestly, so be it. I apologised for offending him, but I won’t apologise for asking him to verify.
So my question – is this seen as far too forward and offensive in Korean dating culture?
