This post was inspired by a recent post I had heard on a K-pop sub Reddit calling Lisa a “narcissist” for her lyrics in her new song SaWaDika (2026) which had caused me to revisit 2022 when Blackpink had released their Born Pink (2022) album, in which there were posts, videos, and comments about the group’s lyrics as many non-fans had felt that Blackpink were putting down other female idols and women in general in songs like Pretty Savage (2020), Shut Down (2022), Typa Girl (2022), and later the Girls (2023). However, as I had researched about similar lyrics from male idols in K-pop comments like “bragging is normal in hip-hop”, “they were speaking facts”, “You guys wouldn’t survive rap songs by American rappers”, and “haven’t you listened to American hip-hop?” tends to be on display for male idols. In 2010, G-dragon and T.O.P. had released a song called Knock Out (2010), in which they had rapped about their success with GD stating that people had wanted to be the “Next G-dragon” due to emulating his style. In 2012, G-dragon was one of the openers for the MAMA Awards in Hong Kong in which he had did a freestyle rap and had accused idols/artists of being “phonies” for trying to copy his style. Later that year, he had released “One of A Kind” (2012) and “Crayon”(2012) in which he had bragged about his wealth and his influence inside of the K-pop industry. In 2013, Suga from BTS had dissed idol rappers for only becoming rappers due to not being able to sing and how the title of rapper tends to suit them in the song We Are Bulletproof Pt.2 (2013).
In 2021, Bobby from IKON had released a song called “U MAD” (2021) in which he had bragged about his success and criticized people for not seeing the potential in him. In 2024, G-dragon had released Power (2024) in which he had called himself the G.O.A.T, a King, and a Living Legend in some of his lyrics in the song. However, there weren’t any posts, videos, and comments about these idols putting down people or calling them “narcissists”. Just recently (which I had mentioned in my first paragraph) there were people agreeing that Lisa was being a “narcissist” for her lyrics in her new song SaWaDika (2026) which to me seems like these elements are not applied to Blackpink nor the members. Non-fans say that all of their songs are about flexing and being better however if people look deep inside their discography, they will see that Blackpink have songs about love, heartbreak, judgement, escaping toxic relationships, self-empowerment, and female empowerment. Non-fans claim that female idols might be offended yet female idols cite the group as role models, listen to their music, and dance to Blackpink’s music in their lives and on stage. Non-fans claim that Blackpink are putting women down, yet the group has a female dominated fanbase and have women filling up their concerts at arenas and stadiums.
So, if these elements can be applied to male idols, then why not Blackpink?
Disclaimer: I am not hating on these male idols for their lyrics but just want to know why everyone was up in arms about Blackpink’s lyrics in their songs if male idols have the similar and somewhat same lyrics in theirs. There has to be more than just misogyny and expectations that people react differently about male and female idols lyrics in their songs.
