I don’t understand what MEOVV’s “Ddi Ro Ri” sample is supposed to accomplish

I was watching some videos from the M Countdown X Mega Concert, and apparently MEOVV performed their upcoming title track there. Here’s the performance clip if you’re curious.

Apparently, they sampled the opening melody of the famous organ piece traditionally attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. Yes, that Bach, the famous German composer from the 18th century.

Now, to provide some context that I’m sure 99.9% of international fans are wondering about, the reason the song is titled “Ddi Ro Ri” is because those syllables are commonly used in Korea to mimic the opening melody of Bach’s piece. It’s not a word or a phrase. It’s just a random collection of sounds that has become heavily associated with that specific Bach melody. It’s basically an old meme that’s been around for well over a decade in Korea. People would jokingly sing or say “ddi ro ri” whenever they were met with despair or some kind of unfortunate situation.

I’m assuming they specifically chose to sample this part of the piece with the domestic audience in mind, but I just don’t see it landing. If you watch the performance, they’re going all in on the girl crush concept (which is very on brand for them) with the styling, choreography, and overall stage presence. But every time the chorus drops and they start singing “Ddi Ro Ri~,” I just can’t take it seriously. The contrast between their serious faces, the overall vibe of the song minus the Bach sample, and then suddenly hearing those meme-associated syllables is just way too jarring for me. It completely kills the vibe and it’s just unfitting. I feel like the song would’ve been much better had they not sampled Bach’s piece at all.

Like are they expecting people to take this seriously, or is there some level of self-awareness that I’m missing? I doubt the intention was for it to come across as comedic. Meovv has a very carefully curated image centered around luxury, so the concept itself seems to be taking the song completely seriously. That’s why I’m so baffled by the producers’ decision. They probably thought sampling that melody would come across as cool or impactful, but because of the cultural baggage attached to it in Korea, it just sounds incredibly unserious to me.

From my perspective, the sample completely clashes with the image they’re trying to project through this song. I genuinely can’t figure out what it’s supposed to achieve beyond generating domestic attention through a decades-old meme. As someone who understands the full context behind this song, I just can’t get behind this choice at all.
