Hot take: Kpop might actually be a loud niche rather than a dominant music genre

I had a bit of a reality check recently.

In Singapore, our National Stadium holds about 55k people.

  • BTS filled 1 night here in 2019
  • BLACKPINK filled 2 nights

But artists like:

  • Coldplay
  • Taylor Swift

both sold out 6 nights.

That’s around 300k people.

What surprised me more is that I almost never see people talking about Coldplay online, while Kpop seems to dominate every social platform.

Which made me wonder:

Is Kpop actually a relatively small part of the overall music market, but it just feels huge because the fandom is extremely loud and active online?

Curious what others think.
