Hanteo has four regional rankings: Global, Japan, China, and America (not sure if this refers to just the US or NA). No ranking for Korea. Odd, isn’t it?
Hanteo draws its figures from Hanteo-affiliated stores. These stores make up the “Hanteo family” and you can see the list here: https://www.hanteochart.com/family/search
The list is extensive. It includes retailers from all over the globe and even includes companies like the Big4 bc they also sell directly to customers ig. I’m not sure of the specifics but presumably these retailers will pay a fee to Hanteo and fill out official forms to report sales figures. In return they are Hanteo certified, assuring customers that the albums they’re buying are official goods and count for Hanteo charts.
For each ranking Hanteo takes into account the numbers being reported by retailers based in those specific regions. Like for Japan they just tally up all the figures reported by Japan-based affiliates. Simple.
So why can’t they do this with Korea-based retailers?
What’s funny is that Hanteo has a ranking for America, yet major retailers like Target and Walmart are not affiliates. I would say its list of domestic affiliates is much more comprehensive, so they could provide precise data for sales in Korea if they wanted to.
