So recently there has been a discussion among netizens and locals form the Matt proxy to the GRAMMYS situation and the amount of microagressions I’ve seen towards Koreans/East Asians is crazyyy.
I read a comment from a non-kpop fan saying “Koreans can’t face racism.” which irked me and people trying to justify thier racism and microagressions towards East Asians.
Is the kpop industry racist yes, does it justify you to generalize every Korean as racist no.
Kpop idols face alot of racism which people try to downplay , especially with its growing expansion. We saw this with how BTS was treated when they were growing in popularity in the west ,SKZ at the 2024 Met Gala, the GRAMMYS etc or how people try to discredit the efforts of idols simply because they’re Korean.
I remember when I was younger getting introduction to kpop for the first time through BLACKPINK and BTS to which people would often say racist things towards them like “Korean men are gay.” “Why are Korean woman so flat.” “They all look the same.” “These people eat dogs.” the lost goes on. I was subjected to having these stereotypical and racist views towards East Asian but I’ve grown but many people sadly still have this mindset.
Another thing is how the west still looks down on the impact of kpop from songs like APT. and Dynamite ,down vote me but dare I say both of these songs deserved a GRAMMY win.
And just because your a kpop fan it doesn’t exempt you from being racist or stereotypical towards your idols like by making fun of idols for not knowing English , disrespecting Korean culture ,mocking accents etc.
I’d also like to mention how people treat the average kpop idol vs the average western celeb.
When people compare the two they act like the Western celebs are more talented and artistic than a kpop idol.
Or people viewing western celebs as authentic and idols as manufactured which is partially true but the Western music industry works the same way as the kpop industry.
And how a Western celebs can be very problematic bit receive less backlash as compared to an idol.
How people talk about how “idols don’t write thier own songs” “kpop is cooperate slop” “kpop is generic” guess what, so is the Western music industry but you only attack the kpop industry?
And let’s also ignore how East Asians are often mocked in other genres such as rap or hiphop and how many white people have this wierd fetish for Asians.
This issue also stems from how racism towards East Asians is never taken seriously or often ignored.
