Does kimchi go bad after 5 days, or is it just fermenting?

I really love kimchi. I usually eat it with rice, but I have a question.
Sometimes I buy kimchi, and after five days, it starts to smell as if it has gone bad, so I throw it away. Is this normal? Does kimchi ferment as it ages, and is it still safe to eat, or should I throw it away?
