BOYNEXTDOOR just finished 3 days of performing at the KSPO Dome in Seoul and they live streamed the concerts online through Weverse, which I watched all three days of.
Every year I see their improvement and just wanted to shout out all the cool stuff they did for the show, and encourage anyone who can make a concert during their tour this year to consider grabbing a ticket!
To start, they performed for 3ish hours every day (the last day went a bit longer, as they threw in several more encore songs) performing 30+ songs with a live band! They added in bits of new choreo to songs we’ve seen before, performed every b-side (besides one) in their discography that we hadn’t seen a live performance for before, including a remix for one with a freestyle dance battle, and full choreo for two others. Taesan learned a bit of bass and added a slap bass outro to Nice Guy, and we got an new intro to Dangerous, a new outro to Is That True?, and an extended ending to ADIOS! We also got a surprise Korean version of their Japanese song Count To Love. To fit all this in, they had minimal VCR and talking segments (two of each during the main show, though they also had another talking segment during the encore).
One of my favorite things to listen for during any of their live performances is the variations in background harmonies and vocals they throw in. It’s not always the same and always brings a fresh twist to their performances! I really liked the changes to Gonna Be A Rock on the third day for example.
They also spent a lot on making the stage design meaningful and fun to watch. The concert started by flashing a number–turns out it was counting their days since debut (the number changed throughout the three days). There was this 3 tier platform and several moving giant screens that moved up and down to reveal different levels of the platform, which opened the concert with 06070. This song is about their trainee days (the number is the zip code of their old building) and the visuals start with them coming up and elevator, to represent them leaving that basement practice room. They then came on screen in the order of joining KOZ. We got some elaborate sets, including a car and a whole room (always have to have a door for One and Only!). There were a couple more moving stage parts: part of the walkway turned into a set of blocks that separated into stairs with screens on all sides of them, and there was a rotating circular lift as well. There’s a little video intro to Live in Paris where Jaehyun voiced out the little spiel pilots make when taking off/landing, which included a gate listing Seoul as the destination (it’s been implied this will change throughout the tour to the stop locations). They lit up the whole dome with stars for So let’s go see the stars. And so on and so forth it was very well designed!
They always mention how much they consider what ONEDOOR might want to see, and always seem to nail it. Last year’s finale concert for their first tour (Asia only), they performed all the year-end remixes that fans loved to watch, segments with their beloved comeback teaser music, Sungho played an acoustic guitar intro to Dear. My Darling… I’ve seen tweets from fans saying they’ve been Pavlov-trained to stop recording during their encores and really just jump and have the time of their lives, and you can see it’s carried over to this year’s concerts too.
Finally, one last shout out to their live band! Kyoto (@repro_kyto) is the band lead, bassist, and Taesan’s bass teacher, Dunk (@hongdunk) on keys, Minki (@imminking) on guitar, and Ebinem (@____silverstone) on Drums. They add so much character into the shows, adding in funny or touching background music as needed during the members’ comments, and doing all the amazing transitions and rearrangements of the songs.
Overall, please consider going to a tour stop if you can! They’re amazing live! This is the first time they’re touring outside of Asia, so the North American venues are on the smaller side (except their Mexico City venue). I doubt we’ll get the backup dancers, or the elaborate stage machinery, but I think it is very likely we’ll have the live band! Even if not, their energy, passion, live singing, and new arrangements make the show worth it already.
