Black American teacher here, currently learning Korean and planning a move to Korea in the next few years. I’m also a single mom, and my son will likely be attending university in Korea, so we’re both doing our homework now and trying to understand what life there might actually look like.
One of my goals is to start building connections and community before I make the move. If you’re Black and currently in Korea, planning to move there, or simply interested in Korean language and culture, let’s connect.
I’d especially love to hear from Black people who have lived, studied, or taught in Korea. I’d love to hear about things like:
– What aspects of life in Korea were different from your experience in the U.S.?
– What challenges caught you off guard?
– What pleasant surprises did you find?
– How did friendships, dating, work relationships, and day-to-day interactions compare to life in America?
– Do Black Americans stationed in Korea and Black civilian expats tend to have overlapping communities, or are those mostly separate worlds?
If you’re not Black but have lived in Korea, feel free to jump in too. I’d love to hear what you’ve observed about multicultural communities and how people from different backgrounds find their place there.
Looking forward to hearing your stories. 감사합니다! 😊
