Disclaimer: The sexualization of women in the entertainment industry should be called out as companies have exploited women for many decades and are continuing to exploit them for profit. This topic discusses the reasons why fans of these girl groups view the criticism of bold acts of girl groups as examples of misogyny and purity culture rather than concern.
On August 14, 2026, Katseye had released the song Hootie Frutti which is the third single from their recently released EP Wild (2026). As soon as the video was released, criticism towards the members’ outfits and choreography in the music video in which many had felt that HYBE and Geffen records is continuing their line of sexualizing the members in their music videos. Posts, videos, and comments had discussed this topic ever since the video’s release which had caused a discussion amongst fans and non-fans regarding Katseye’s outfits and bold choreography. During these discussions, fans had felt that people were showcasing “purity behavior” due to the members stating that they prefer the sexy and bold concept and that this type of discussions don’t particular happen for male music acts in the entertainment industry. In today’s world, the definition of a puritan is a person with censorious moral beliefs, particularly about pleasure and sex.
In society, “purity culture” has been a constant effect on women due to them being expected to wear a certain outfit while leaving the house due to the belief that men might not control themselves when they see women. However, no matter what women wear, a lot of men will still go after them and in the end, and women still get the blame because they had “woken” men’s desires in them. In Katseye’s case, a lot of people don’t care if the members prefer this type of style because at the end of the day, they are under corporations run by men who will not hesitate to sexualize them to gain more fans and profit. Even girl groups that have members who are adults also get the brunt of the criticism as many had felt that these girl groups are appealing to the “male gaze” and are being bad influences on their young fans. Take Blackpink for example as in between 2022-2023, the members had received constant criticism in posts, comments, and videos, as many had felt that Blackpink as a girl group should set an example for young girls in their fanbase due to being the “biggest girl group in the world”.
Even Jennie and Lisa, had a video made about them by a Youtuber who had felt that both women were selling themselves out to appease to audiences globally. Not only in K-pop, but outside of the industry female acts that have a bold image, have been criticized in posts, comments, and videos as many people had felt that these women were being bad “role models” to their fans. Acts like Britney Spears, Cardi B, Megan Thee Estallion, Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, and Blackpink have had been called bad “role models” and being a bad influence on their young female fans that support them. The fact is that most of these videos are made by women as the number of videos that are made about these acts being accused of appealing to the “male gaze” and being a bad influence towards their young fans is staggering. Now compare that to male music acts (minor and adult) who have performed shirtless, grabbed their private parts, did bold choreography, and dry humped the air/floor yet there are less posts, comments, and videos calling this out.
Now make no mistake about it, entertainment companies need to be call out when it comes to forcing their acts (male/female) (minor/adult) to do these things to gain more profit and fans. However, when it comes to focusing more on one side than the other, it from fans starts questions on whether or not people do really care about women inside the entertainment industry.
