I’m hoping we can have a discussion in good faith without this turning into fan wars. I know spotify charts aren’t all that but I’m still curious about the bigger picture. I randomly came across a post on my tl about songs spotify charting and the current numbers surprised me.
It sent me down a rabbit hole and what did catch my attention is how some groups that previously had at least a song or multiple songs chart on Spotify global for 30+ days are now having releases that either do not chart at all or barely last a week or two. Groups like Aespa, IVE, Le sserafim, Stray kids and more have had songs that managed to have pretty good global runs but new releases lasted a week or two. Currently, its BP solos, BTS, katseye (I know they’re kpop adjacent) and the hybe gg collab that’s going strong.
It just got me thinking, if for future releases can a group name/ hype and a good song be enough to keep a song charting for months or does it now increasingly need virality, playlisting or autoplay. Or is it simply casual listeners moving on to newer groups. Some 5th gen groups seem to be having good streaming success , but it is still too early to tell how they will do in the long-term.
It could also just be my perception or in my head that previous releases just felt so much bigger. I’m not sure why seeing this randomly today genuinely surprised me, I feel like we had some really great releases this year like Bang bang, lemonade, This & that to name a few so i did not expect such short global runs. With Apple music looking fairly similar outside of a few exceptions , I’m wondering if there is a change in music consumption. Is it becoming even harder for songs to chart longer without a viral moment or playlisting push?
