I came across a post by a Korean user who said that Melon’s Top 100 has become incredibly boring to listen to lately. They pointed out that 31 of the 100 songs on the chart come from just three artists: 15 by LYW, 10 by Rescene, and 6 by PLAVE. They called it the chart takeover by ajumma fans (LYW), ajussi fans (Rescene), and noona fans (PLAVE) lol
They also said that these songs are charting primarily because all three artists have such massive fandoms in Korea that their fans’ continuous mass streaming alone is enough to keep them on the chart. As a result, for listeners who aren’t particularly interested in these artists, the current Top 100 makes for a pretty monotonous listening experience as a casual listener.
I’m not from Korea, so I can’t quite relate, but I thought it was pretty eye opening to see that nearly a THIRD of the Top 100 chart comes from just three artists haha It’s really a testament to how big and dedicated these fandoms are. Also, quite surprising that NEON has managed to fend off all these big fandoms and still remain at the top of the chart.
