The role of Philippines’ presence in fandoms

Before anyone gets me, I’m fully aware there are bigger music markets than the Philippines (duh), with much greater buying and streaming power. I’m not trying to argue otherwise. I’m just fascinated by the role the Philippines seems to play in fandoms, whether Kpop or not.

According to the data in the table below, the Philippines ranks 9th globally in total social media users.

Country Population Social Media Users % of Population using social media
🇨🇳 China 1.44B 1.30B 90.3%
🇮🇳 India 1.47B 500M 34.1%
🇺🇸 United States 347M 254M 73.0%
🇮🇩 Indonesia 286M 180M 62.9%
🇧🇷 Brazil 213M 150M 70.4%
🇷🇺 Russia 144M 106M 73.7%
🇲🇽 Mexico 132M 99M 74.9%
🇯🇵 Japan 123M 99M 80.5%
🇵🇭 Philippines 117M 95.8M 81.9%

And this is where I find things interesting! In terms of total number of social media users, the Philippines is No. 9. But in terms of social media penetration among the countries above, it ranks No. 2 behind only China. Around 81.9% of the Philippine population uses social nedia which is way more compared to other countries. Note that they also have a smaller population compared to Mexico and Japan but their social media users are close (and Philippines surpassing them in % of users per population).

I’m a multi and from what I’ve personally observed, some of the biggest and most organized official fanbases, fan projects, voting teams, and fan accounts often seem to come from the Philippines.

Filipino Kpop fandoms in particular seem to be very organized and extremely good at using social media to mobilize people. Whether it’s voting, streaming, birthday projects, mass hashtags, donation drives, or coordinating events, there’s often a pretty strong Philippine presence even if the event is happening in another country.

From my friends and talks, social media is a big hobby for most Filipinos due to the rising costs of living, luxuries, and entertainment which makes the free internet a hotspot for passing time. That’s why they can get organized and be an important backbone for kpop groups.

And again, I’m not saying the Philippines is a bigger music market than the US, Japan, China, etc. It obviously isn’t. Purchasing power, physical album sales, streaming markets, concert revenue, and other metrics are completely different things.

I’m talking specifically about online visibility and fandom mobilization. From what I’ve seen across different Kpop fandoms, having a large and active Philippine fanbase can give a group a pretty stable online presence. There’s even a saying I’ve seen around Filo spaces that once you have Filipinos’ loyalty, you’re set.

This isn’t just limited to kpop but western acts too and even actors. This is a whole other convo though so I won’t get into it but my point is the fandom culture in the Philippines is a mini force of its’ own.

These are just my thoughts and observations so I hope everyone is polite. Have you noticed Filo presence in your official fanbases too?
