So this is a weirdly personal confession for a noodle post, but here we are. Three days ago I went a little too hard at a company dinner (회식, for anyone who doesn’t know the concept — mandatory-ish work drinking that somehow always ends with me blacking out and waking up the next morning with zero memory of how the night ended). Woke up the next morning feeling like a truck hit me, and did what every Korean does in this situation: reached for hangover food. Korea basically has a whole food category dedicated to this — it’s a huge part of the drinking culture here. Haejangguk, kongnamul soup, spicy tteokguk — anything hot, savory, a little spicy, with broth you can slurp until your soul returns to your body. This time I grabbed a pack of 우불** *레스토랑* ***즉석우동* (Woobool Restaurant Instant Udon) that I had lying around, and honestly it wrecked my expectations for instant udon. The noodles are thick, chewy, properly QQ (not the flat mushy ones you get in a lot of instant packs), and the broth is this deep, savory anchovy-kelp base that doesn’t taste like powdered soup base pretending to be broth. What actually surprised me is the included dadaegi (다대기) sauce packet — it’s a Korean chili paste mix that lets you dial the spice level up or down yourself instead of the broth coming pre-spiced for you, which I really appreciated since I like mine on the spicier side. There’s also this little ssukgat (쑥갓, crown daisy) block mixed in, and it genuinely deepens the broth — gives it a cleaner, almost herbal freshness that cuts through the richness instead of just tasting like salt and MSG. Here’s the thing though — it was so good that I made it again the next day. And then the day after that. Not because I was hungover again (I wasn’t, I promise), but because 우불우동 just does something no other instant udon I’ve tried does: it tastes like it came from an actual udon place, not a convenience store shelf. Turns out that’s because it literally is — I looked it up out of curiosity and Woobool Restaurant (우불식당) is an actual, well-known restaurant in Seoul, which honestly explains why this tastes so much more “real” than typical instant udon. My non-Korean friends who’ve tried it keep asking where to buy it because they assumed it was fresh, made-to-order udon. So now I’m just a guy who ate the same bowl of Woobool Restaurant udon three days straight and would do it again. If you’re ever nursing a rough morning after Korean drinking culture does its thing, or you just want to know what actual Korean-style 즉석우동 (instant udon) is supposed to taste like — this is the one I’d point you to.
