When fans say “this b-side should’ve been the title track instead,” they’re wrong most of the time

This is probably one of the most common clichés in K-pop discourse. With virtually every release from every group, you’ll see fans claiming that the company made a mistake by choosing the title track over a particular b-side.

I think fans often mistake personal preference for commercial viability. Just because a song has more depth in its production, a more complex instrumental, or simply sounds better to them doesn’t automatically mean it should have been the title track.

There are a few cases where a b-side ends up being more commercially successful than the title track, but those are rare exceptions. Most casual listeners tend to gravitate toward songs that are easy to digest, catchy, and often quite simple and repetitive. That’s not always the case, of course, as we’ve seen more musically complex songs do well on the charts but accessibility is usually a much bigger factor in a song’s success than musical complexity.
