Disclaimer: This is not about criticism towards their music as every person has a right to a preference and opinion on an artist’s music. This is more about the trajectory of their careers and how casual non-fans discuss them in posts, videos, and comments. I am not going to mention antis and toxic solo fans as they are going to think whatever they want about the members’ solo careers and their trajectory.
After all the members of Blackpink had released new solo music, I tend to notice the way casual non-fans discuss the trajectory of the members’ solo music and how they are doing. Often times there are discussions about the members struggling or that one is doing better than the other despite all four members achieving different types of success solo wise. For example, there have been discussions about Lisa’s YouTube views, Jisoo receiving less attention, and the results of all four members solo songs after they had been released. I see many people attribute this discussion to Blackpink’s status in K-pop however there are other popular and influential girl groups that have had members debut as solo artists or achieve individual success outside of the group yet there aren’t really discussions about how those members are doing. For example, Twice is considered one of the Big 3 groups alongside BTS and Blackpink and have had 4/9 members to debut as solo artists yet there isn’t any discussion about their solo careers nor comparisons amongst success between the members. SNSD is considered one of the most influential K-pop groups in the industry and have had members achieve solo success, but there weren’t any discussions about how those members are doing. The same can be said for Mamamoo and Red Velvet yet the solo careers of Blackpink are the only ones discussed amongst non-fans in posts, videos, and comments on social media platforms, inside the K-pop Reddit community, and on YouTube.
I see many people bringing up the members promoting in the U.S. a lot hence why these discussions are being made however there have been tons of K-pop idols promoting and performing in the U.S. just like the members are. Also, domestic charts have been brought up when it comes to how hell their songs are charting so it is not only about international success. Whenever I go on YouTube, there are discussions about the members failing or that Jennie and Lisa are selling themselves out to the U.S. due to their bold performances which makes me think if the members are being set to higher expectations compared to other girl groups in K-pop.
