If you wanna hate this is not the place so get out of here. I dont want any company stans in this comment section.
Now that we have that out of the way, the three songs mentioned in the title are songs where two or more groups of members from two or more different groups from the same company collaborated, where the track had atleast 5 people. Unfortunately these are the only collaborations I know of that fit this metric. The reason for this specific metric is that when it’s only one single member taken from different groups it’s like a completely new group vs having 2 members from each groups makes it more focused on the group identity of the members within the track or maybe that’s how I see it. You may disagree. The three songs mentioned above comes from Hybe, Sm and Yg respectively. I don’t know if JYP or any other major company has done this or not. I’d love to have a track with twice x got7 (idk if they’re still JYP) x itzy or sth similar of that sort.
I feel like in “Step Back”, it felt very SM style (I know duh). The singing, the dancing , the rapping. I think they had 2 members from snsd, 2 members from red velvet, 2 members aespa and boa (love the fact that her voice was so unique). If their respective groups did not exist and they just formed one group. Someone who didn’t know these groups would definitely think that they’re like a legit group. That was the vibe I got at least, in that song specifically. It felt like a song that Aespa and boa would do very well if the song had gone to them. I don’t see this song being an snsd or red velvet track.
(Note: fuck seungri that piece of shit)
For “Lolipop”, it’s not a proper collab song like the other two mentioned but that’s all I know from yg in terms of famous collaboration. Back when the world was unaware of burning sun scandal and I was very young I thought it was so cool that 2 of my favorite groups at the times were collaborating. Music wise I think big bang and 2ne1 were very much alike. Atleast during that time. Maybe that was YG’s intention with 2ne1. Because they were girl group and boy group it was quite easy to make distinctions between the group, but if they had decided to continue as a coed group, it would’ve worked stylistically well.
Now for last, “Iconic by mistake “: maybe because the three groups filmed separately but they recorded the song together, each group was very distinct in their sounds, vibes, style and dancing. For me it worked cuz it was quite unique. Lesserafim had the cool girl fearlessness in both their sounds, styling and also their dancing. They really made it look easy(yes a pun). And you hear that style of crazy, spaghetti, boom boom boom, in their verses and even the chorus that they do. And then you have the illit girls. Cute, fairylike, mischievous yet very precise. These adjectives apply to all their dancing, voices and styling. Their voices were addictive. And then we have our pop divas, Katseye. Fierce, sexy, intimidating. Those are the adjectives that came to my head when it was their turn. When we see each group doing the choreo, they do it so differently but somehow matches. Now i am curious if they’ll try to make it distinct in the performance showcase or not, but i know that all of them are capable of matching each other. I know a lot of people felt like it was a more “Katseye like” song but I can see each group making it their own. And that is what I enjoyed about this collaboration. I think this diversity could be because even though all of them are under hybe, they’re under different sub labels.
If I had to describe each collaboration in terms of food: step back felt like a hot clear soup made with different vegetables and aromatics.
Lolipop felt like sweet and sour candy.
Iconic by mistake felt like a poke bowl, a refreshing mix of taste and texture.
