Best way to store Gochugaru?

Hello! I just bought Gochugaru for the first time ever. It’s the coarse stuff intended for kimchi and I purchased three one pound bags of it. It will take me a long time to go through all of it and I want to ensure that I properly store it so it maintains quality. Everything I read online recommended either storing in the refrigerator or freezer, does anyone prefer one over the other, and is there any reason why?

Also, if I do freeze it, can I use it directly out of the freezer or will I have to defrost it first? Thank you 🙂
