I am 1st generation Mexican-Korean-American,
I’m curious if anyone else has a family recipe with a story like this.
My family immigrated to the U.S from a small village in South Korea called Soyari in 1983.
Back then, my aunt (the family chef) had never cooked with ingredients like jalapeños, serranos, habaneros, or pineapple because they simply weren’t common where she grew up.
She started experimenting by combining those new ingredients with traditional Korean cooking.
The result became this incredibly versatile sauce that our family started putting on everything:
• Dumplings
• Egg rolls
• Spring rolls
• Rice
• Stir-fries
• Marinades
For decades it was just our family’s sauce. We referred to it as, “the sauce”.
Years later, during the pandemic. I decided to build a company around it to honor her after she passed away.
What’s a dish your family accidentally created after moving to the U.S.?
Maybe it started because you couldn’t find an ingredient from home, or maybe you discovered a new one that changed everything.
I’m excited to see who else is out there,
