Aside from the typical issues (security, overwork, legal issues, etc.), how would you evaluate SM’s current performance from a business or musical aspect? I think they’ve lagged behind the other Big 4 companies in a pretty noticeable way this year.
Business: It’s odd to me that despite SM’s attempts to appeal to the Western audience for such a long time (e.g. BoA) they still don’t really seem to have any idea how to do it. Each of the other Big 4 companies has a major group with a sizable audience in the U.S. while SM doesn’t really have one?
At this point in the maturation of the k-pop industry, shouldn’t there be some know-how by now? Or at least hire people who know how?
Music: I’ve always thought that SM’s music has been the most progressive and willing to push the envelope, but lately everything just sounds like what I would expect from SM. There weren’t any major hits this year and the soundscape, aside from a few songs, was pretty…uninspired.
I’m interested to hear your thoughts since I know there are people on here more tapped in than me about these aspects.
