City pays shops to drop English for Korean signs - The Korea Times

The headline is a little misleading–they are not paying shops to DROP English so much as to ADD Korean.

Also, the city is Suwon.

On the one hand, this makes total sense. Shops in Korea should really have a Korean name. However, I can see how it is a bit silly for immediately recognizable global brands (for example, Nike) to be pushed to include Korean on their signs.

While it is fun and neat for foreigners, it really does nothing for Koreans. A Korean doesn’t need to read 나이키 to know that the store is a Nike store. It seems a bit wasteful to subsidize this kind of thing with tax money, but I kind of get it for touristy areas. Kind of like how Insadong used to require all their shops to only have Korean signs.
