Why does girl crush in K-pop now feel so much softer compared to 2nd and even 3rd gen?

I apologize for being a little gatekeep-y here, but when I think of girl crush I think of something with more edge to it. The 2nd gen version of the concept usually had some grit and edge to it.

And even in the 3rd gen you still had girl crush songs that were genuinely fierce. Something like EVERGLOW’s “FIRST” could pass for a boy group song without changing much about the production or choreography.

A lot of newer girl crush still has the confidence and attitude, but the presentation feels softer and more polished to me. A lot of it actually reminds me more of what used to be called “teen crush,” like early ITZY. It’s confident and cool, but brighter, cleaner and more playful.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing because I like plenty of newer girl crush songs. I just feel like what we call “girl crush” has changed a lot and doesn’t have quite the same edge anymore.
